Who Am I Now? Finding Your Identity in Christ

When you come to Christ, everything changes. That may sound simple, even cliché—but the truth is more profound than most realize. Faith in Jesus isn't an add-on to your life. It is the death of who you were and the birth of someone new.

Yet many Christians believe in Jesus and still carry the old identity—the guilt, the fear, the striving.

The moment you place your trust in Christ, you are no longer who you were. You are not simply a sinner trying to do better. You are born again. A new creation. Not a better version of the old you—a completely new you.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV)

Truth in an Age of Compromise, Part Two: Growing in Christ and the Spirit-Filled Life by Dr. Bradley Sliedrecht (book cover)

A New Name, A New Nature

When God changed Abram's name to Abraham or Saul's name to Paul, it wasn't cosmetic. It marked a new identity and a new purpose. So too, when you were saved, you received a new identity.

The Bible says you are now:

  • A child of God (John 1:12)

  • A citizen of heaven (Philippians 3:20)

  • The righteousness of God in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21)

  • A temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19)

  • God's workmanship, created for good works (Ephesians 2:10)

Yet how many believers still live as if they are spiritual orphans—uncertain, ashamed, defeated? The truth is, identity always shapes action. If you don't know who you are, you won't know how to live.

You Are Not What the World Says

The world offers counterfeit identities. You are what you wear. You are what you earn. You are how you feel. You are your mistakes. You are your trauma. You are your success.

But the Word of God tears down every false identity. You are what God says you are. The Christian life is not performance-based. It's identity-based. You live differently because you are different.

"You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light…" (Ephesians 5:8, NIV)

Notice the order: you were darkness, now you are light—therefore live like it. Not to earn your salvation, but because salvation has changed who you are.

Putting Off the Old Self

Even as a new creation, you'll feel the pull of the old identity. Paul called it "the old self," and he urged believers to take it off like filthy clothes.

"You were taught… to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires… to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." (Ephesians 4:22–24, NIV)

This isn't a one-time moment—it's a daily decision. The old self still whispers: "You'll never change." But the Word shouts louder: "You are mine. You are forgiven. You are holy." And holiness doesn't start with rules—it starts with identity.

Becoming Who You Already Are

Discipleship is not about achieving an identity—it's about aligning your life with the identity God already gave you.

  • You don't pray to earn approval. You pray because you're a son or daughter who already has access.

  • You don't resist sin to become holy. You resist sin because you are holy, and sin is no longer your nature.

  • You don't serve to earn favor. You serve because grace has transformed your heart.

This is the heartbeat of discipleship: becoming who you already are in Christ.

In a World That Isn't

The culture around you will not affirm this identity. In fact, it will try to strip it from you. That's why you must root yourself deeply in the Word, in prayer, and in the fellowship of believers. You are not called to blend in—you are called to stand firm.

When you live out your true identity, others will see a different kind of person—one who reflects Jesus. The world needs not more Christians who conform, but disciples who stand rooted in who they are.

How Can I Apply This Today?

Ask yourself: Do I believe what God says about me, or what others have spoken over me? Am I still living like the old me, or have I embraced the identity I now have in Christ?

Spend time in the Word this week focusing on what Scripture says about who you are. Write it down. Pray it. Speak it over your life. Let your heart begin to agree with heaven.

"For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God." (Colossians 3:3, NIV)
