Lesson 4: If God Loves Poverty, Why Did Jesus Feed the Multitude? Student Handout.

Writer: Bradley SliedrechtBradley Sliedrecht

Theme: Exploring Jesus’ miracles of provision and their true purpose in pointing to His identity and mission.

Key Scripture Passages:

  • John 6:26-27 “You are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life.”

  • Luke 5:4-11 “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”

  • Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Teaching Highlights:

  1. Purpose of Jesus’ Miracles:

    • The feeding of the 5,000 and miraculous catch of fish highlight God’s compassion and provision for physical needs.

    • These miracles were signs pointing to Jesus’ identity as the Bread of Life and the Lord over creation.

  1. Critiquing Hyper-prosperity Theology:

    • Hyper-prosperity theology misinterprets these miracles by focusing solely on material provision, missing their spiritual significance.

  1. Biblical Prosperity in Context:

    • True prosperity involves trusting God for physical needs while prioritizing spiritual nourishment and eternal life in Christ.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What do Jesus’ miracles reveal about His mission and priorities?

  2. How can we avoid focusing on material blessings at the expense of spiritual growth?

  3. How does God provide for His people in ways beyond financial wealth?

Reflection and Application:

  1. Reflect on John 6: Meditate on Jesus’ teaching about eternal life and provision.

  2. Pray for Trust in God’s Provision: Ask God to align your heart with His priorities.

  3. Serve in Ministry: Participate in a local initiative to meet others’ needs, embodying Christ’s example of compassion.

Memory Verse: Matthew 6:33"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Closing Prayer:

  • Thank God for His provision in your life and His eternal promises.

  • Pray for wisdom to trust God for your needs and focus on His eternal purposes.

Session Objective:

By the end of this session, participants will:

  1. Understand the purpose of Jesus’ miracles of provision as signs pointing to His mission.

  2. Critique the misuse of these passages in hyper-prosperity theology.

  3. Embrace a Christ-centered perspective on God’s provision and eternal priorities.
