Heavenly Father, we come before You today with hearts open to receive Your word. We thank You for calling us to be Your chosen people, each of us playing a unique and vital role in declaring Your goodness and light in a world that desperately needs it. As we dig into Your Scriptures today, we ask that You empower us with Your Holy Spirit, guiding us to live out our identity in Christ boldly and faithfully.
Open our eyes to see the needs around us and stir within us a passion for everyday evangelism. May everything, we do bring glory to Your name and contribute to building Your glorious church. - In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.
Our Theme has been “A People of God Unleashed to Build a Glorious Church,” and today, staying with our theme, I want us to Embrace Everyday Evangelism by exploring 5 points.
The 5 points are:
1. Understanding Our Divine Identity (1 Peter 2:9)
2. Empowered by the Holy Spirit for Effective Witness (Acts 1:8)
3. Responding to the Brokenness Around Us (Nehemiah 1:3-4)
4. Taking Bold Action in Building God’s Kingdom (Nehemiah 2:17-18)
5. Trusting in God’s Provision and Protection (Nehemiah 2:19-20)
In an increasingly complex and challenging world, the Church's mission remains as vital and urgent as ever: to build a glorious church that not only stands as a beacon of hope and light but also actively engages in evangelism.
However, this work is not confined to the walls of our church buildings or reserved for Sunday mornings. Instead, it is a calling that extends into every aspect of our daily lives.
Today, we will explore what it means to be a people of God unleashed to build His church by embracing everyday evangelism—a mission that every believer is called to live out with intentionality, passion, and dedication.
1. Understanding Our Divine Identity (1 Peter 2:9)
1 Peter 2:9 (MEV): "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may declare the goodness of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light."
The foundation of our evangelistic efforts lies in our understanding of who we are in Christ. Peter's words are a powerful reminder that we are not just another group of people—we are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people set apart for God’s own possession.
This identity is not merely a privilege but a responsibility. We have been called out of darkness into God’s marvelous light, and our lives are meant to reflect that transformation to the world around us.
This identity should shape how we interact with others, make decisions, and use our time in our everyday lives. Knowing that we belong to God and are His representative on earth compels us to live purposefully. Every conversation, action, and decision becomes an opportunity to declare God's goodness and draw others closer to Him. Evangelism is not an occasional activity but a lifestyle—a natural outflow of who we are in Christ.
2. Empowered by the Holy Spirit for Effective Witness (Acts 1:8)
Acts 1:8 (MEV): "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
The task of evangelism can often seem daunting. Sharing our faith in a world that is increasingly skeptical or even hostile to the gospel can be intimidating. However, Jesus has not left us to undertake this mission in our strength. He has promised us the power of the Holy Spirit to equip us for this work. This empowerment is not just for a select few; it is available to every believer.
The Holy Spirit gives us the boldness, wisdom, and compassion we need to be effective witnesses for Christ. This means that our abilities or fears do not limit us. The Spirit leads us into opportunities to share the gospel, gives us the words to say, and works in the hearts of those we encounter. When we rely on the Holy Spirit, evangelism becomes less about what we can do and more about what God can do through us.
In our everyday lives, this empowerment might manifest in simple but profound ways, such as a conversation with a coworker, a moment of prayer with a friend, or a chance encounter with a stranger. The Holy Spirit is always at work, guiding us to be witnesses in our own "Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth," which for most of us means our homes, neighbourhoods, workplaces, and communities.
3. Responding to the Brokenness Around Us (Nehemiah 1:3-4)
Nehemiah 1:3-4 (MEV): "They said to me, 'The remnant that is left of the captivity there in the province are in great distress and reproach. Also, the wall of Jerusalem remains broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.' When I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; then I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven."
Nehemiah's heart was deeply moved when he heard about the brokenness in Jerusalem. His response was not one of indifference but of deep concern, prayer, and action. In the same way, we are surrounded by people whose lives are broken, who are in distress, and who desperately need the hope that only Jesus can provide.
Everyday evangelism begins with a heart that is sensitive to the needs around us. We cannot afford to be indifferent or assume someone else will step in. Like Nehemiah, we must be moved by the brokenness we see—whether it’s a friend going through a difficult time, a neighbour struggling with loneliness, or a community grappling with poverty or injustice. Evangelism is more than just words; it’s about meeting people where they are, caring for their needs, and offering them the love and hope of Christ.
Practically, this might mean volunteering, offering resources, or being present for someone hurting. It means being willing to get involved, even when inconvenient or uncomfortable. As we respond to the brokenness around us, we build bridges for the gospel, creating opportunities to share the message of salvation.
4. Taking Bold Action in Building God’s Kingdom (Nehemiah 2:17-18)
Nehemiah 2:17-18 (MEV): "Then I said to them, 'You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer be a reproach.' Then I told them of the hand of my God which had been good upon me, and also of
the king’s words that he had spoken to me. So they said, 'Let us rise up and build.' So they strengthened their hands for this good work."
Nehemiah did not just stop feeling burdened by the situation in Jerusalem; he took bold action. He rallied the people together, encouraged them, and led them in rebuilding the walls. Similarly, we are called to take bold action in building God’s kingdom through everyday evangelism.
This involves being proactive, looking for opportunities to share the gospel, and inviting others to experience the love of Christ. It means stepping out in faith, even when it’s challenging, or we face opposition. Evangelism is not always easy, but it is always worth it. Each time we share our faith, we build God’s glorious church.
In our daily lives, taking bold action might look like starting a Bible study at work, organizing a neighbourhood outreach event, or simply inviting someone to church. The important thing is that we don’t wait for someone else to do the work. We are all called to be builders in God’s kingdom, and every small act of evangelism contributes to the greater work of God’s church.
5. Trusting in God’s Provision and Protection (Nehemiah 2:19-20)
Nehemiah 2:19-20 (MEV): "But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they laughed us to scorn and despised us and said, 'What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?' Then answered I them and said to them, 'The God of heaven, He will prosper us. Therefore we His servants will arise and build. But you have no portion, or right, or memorial in Jerusalem.'"
Nehemiah and the people faced mockery and opposition as they worked to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Yet, Nehemiah responded with unwavering faith: "The God of heaven, He will prosper us." He trusted that because the work was God’s work, He would ensure its success.
As we engage in everyday evangelism, we will face challenges and opposition. There will be times when people reject the message, when circumstances seem to work against us, or when we feel discouraged. But like Nehemiah, we must trust in God’s provision and protection. If we are faithful to the mission He has given us, He will provide the resources, courage, and strength we need to succeed. (Say together).
Trusting in God’s provision means recognizing that the results are in His hands. Our job is to be faithful (Say together), to sow seeds of the gospel, and to trust that God will bring the harvest in His time. We may not always see immediate results, but we can be confident that our labour in the Lord is never in vain.
Conclusion
As a people of God unleashed to build a glorious church, we are called to embrace everyday evangelism as a central part of our mission. This means living out our identity in Christ, relying on the power of the Holy Spirit, responding to the brokenness around us, taking bold action, and trusting in God’s provision and protection.
The task before us is great, but our God is greater. He has chosen us, equipped us, and promised to be with us every step of the way.
We must commit ourselves to this work, knowing that as we do, we are building something eternal—a glorious church that reflects God's heart and brings His light to the darkest places.
May we each take up the mantle of everyday evangelism, and through our lives, may many come to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ. As we go out into the world, let us be the hands and feet of Jesus, reaching out with His love, sharing His truth, and building His church for His glory.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the powerful reminder of our calling to be a people unleashed to build Your glorious church through everyday evangelism.
We recognize that this mission is not just for specific days or certain people but for each of us in every moment. Lord, we ask for Your forgiveness if we have been living contrary to Your word, neglecting this call or allowing fear, complacency, or the distractions of this world to hinder our witness.
Today, we repent of how we have failed to live out our identity in Christ and ask You to fill us anew with Your Holy Spirit. Empower us to step out in faith, take bold actions in sharing Your love and truth, and trust in Your provision as we face opposition. Help us to see the brokenness around us and respond with the compassion and urgency that comes from knowing You.
Father, we commit ourselves to the work You have set before us. Let us be instruments of Your grace, vessels of Your truth, and ambassadors of Your kingdom. As we leave this place, may our lives reflect Your glory, drawing others to You.
We surrender our fears, our doubts, and our excuses, and we choose to follow You with our whole hearts. Thank You for the privilege of being part of Your mission. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
