Writer: Bradley SliedrechtBradley Sliedrecht

Praise the Lord.

Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands.

Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever. Psalm 112:1-3 (NIV)

Historical Context: Psalm 112 is a wisdom psalm, reflecting the blessings of those who fear the Lord and delight in His commands. Written in the post-exilic period, it reflects the Jewish understanding of covenant blessings tied to obedience and faithfulness.

Literary Context: Psalm 112 is closely linked to Psalm 111, both being acrostic psalms that praise God and emphasize His works. Psalm 112 shifts the focus to the life of the righteous, showcasing their blessings as a reflection of their faithfulness to God.

Word Study

  • "Fear the Lord" (יָרֵא יְהוָה, yare Yahweh): Denotes reverence and awe towards God, acknowledging His authority and majesty.

  • "Delight" (חָפֵץ, chafetz): Indicates deep pleasure and joy in God’s commandments.

  • "Wealth and riches" (הוֹן וָעֹשֶׁר, hon vaosher): Represents material and spiritual abundance as a sign of God’s favor.

Theological Context: The psalm underscores the covenantal principle that fearing the Lord and delighting in His commands lead to divine blessings. It reflects the broader theological framework of retribution in wisdom literature: righteousness brings rewards, while wickedness leads to downfall.

Scriptural Cross-referencing

  • Proverbs 3:9-10: Blessings associated with honoring the Lord with wealth.

  • Deuteronomy 28:1-14: Covenant blessings for obedience.

  • Matthew 6:33: Seek first God’s Kingdom, and all these things will be added to you.

Application to the Original Audience

For Israelites, this psalm was a reminder of the tangible and spiritual rewards of covenant faithfulness. It reinforced their identity as God’s people and the blessings tied to obedience.

Application to the Contemporary Audience

The principles of Psalm 112 transcend time, emphasizing that a life centered on God brings peace, provision, and purpose. While material blessings are not guaranteed, the focus is on the spiritual abundance and legacy of righteousness.

The Fruitful Life of Reverence and Obedience

Psalm 112:1-3 presents a compelling portrait of the person who fears the Lord and delights in His commands. It reads, "Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands. Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever." These verses encapsulate the heart of biblical wisdom literature: reverence for God is the foundation of a life marked by stability, prosperity, and enduring righteousness.

The psalmist begins with a call to praise, redirecting attention from human actions to the Lord as the source of all blessings. The fear of the Lord, a recurring theme in wisdom literature, is not characterized by terror but by awe and reverence. It is the acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty and a commitment to align one’s life with His commands. This reverence leads to a deep delight in God’s Word—a delight that transforms obedience from duty into joy.

The blessings described in Psalm 112:1-3 are both generational and personal. The promise that "their children will be mighty in the land" reflects the covenantal nature of God’s relationship with His people, where the faithfulness of one generation impacts the next. Material blessings, symbolized by "wealth and riches," serve as tangible reminders of God’s provision. However, the psalm emphasizes that these blessings are undergirded by a deeper, eternal reality: "their righteousness endures forever."

Theologically, this passage underscores a central biblical truth: obedience to God brings blessings, not as a transaction but as a reflection of God’s character. Just as the Lord is generous, righteous, and faithful, so too are His blessings upon those who walk in His ways. This aligns with Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6:33, where seeking God’s Kingdom is prioritized above all else.

For contemporary readers, Psalm 112:1-3 offers a timeless challenge and assurance. It calls believers to live lives rooted in reverence for God, trusting that such a foundation brings spiritual and often material fruitfulness. While modern culture may equate success with personal effort or material wealth alone, this psalm redirects attention to the ultimate source of all blessings: a life aligned with God’s purposes.

In summary, Psalm 112:1-3 is a hymn of hope and an affirmation of faith. It reminds believers that the blessings of God are not fleeting but enduring, extending across generations and rooted in the righteousness that comes from walking in reverence and delight before the Lord.
