What If the Reward Is Overcoming Sin?

Hebrews 11:6 (NIV 2011) says:
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

We often think of reward in terms of blessings, answered prayers, or the hope of eternal life. And while those are certainly part of God's promises, there’s another reward that we often overlook—the grace to overcome sin.
What if one of the greatest rewards of diligently seeking God is not simply what He gives us, but who we become in the process?
What if the reward is the soft heart, the sensitive conscience, the deep reverence that grieves when we fall short, and the power of the Holy Spirit helping us to rise again?
To struggle with sin when you truly fear the Lord is not easy. It's not casual. It’s painful. There’s an anguish that comes when you realize you've grieved the heart of God. Not just because you broke a rule, but because you broke relationship—and you know He saw it. That awareness—that fear of the Lord—is part of the reward. It's a sign that you're not numb anymore. You're alive.
This is why the struggle matters. This is why conviction is a gift. This is why the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).
Sadly, many don’t feel that weight. They brush off sin, never giving God a second thought. They read their Bibles with unrepentant hearts, not realizing that the very Word they’re reading is the Word they’re grieving. To ignore sin while reading Scripture is to silence the Spirit who inspired it.
But to those who earnestly seek Him—to those who struggle and wrestle and grieve—God rewards them with something deeper than mere comfort. He rewards them with transformation. He gives them a hatred for sin, a hunger for righteousness, and a desire to walk in holiness. And that is what pleases God.
“In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.”—Hebrews 12:4 (NIV 2011)
The struggle may be hard. But it’s holy. And your reverent pursuit of God—imperfect though it may be—is precious in His sight. Keep pressing in. Keep seeking. Because faith pleases Him. And overcoming sin is one of the greatest rewards of all.
